The Chaplain
Rev.
Dr.
Lucas John
Mix
Lucas recently joined ECM as the
chaplain. He grew up in Seattle, where he went to the
University of Washington (go
Huskies!) and studied biochemistry and comparative religion. After his
bachelor's degree, Lucas went on to take a PhD at
Harvard, studying biology and the
development of photosynthesis. He then went to the
Church Divinity School of the Pacific
- next to Cal, Berkeley - where he
picked up an MDiv while working with the
NASA Astrobiology Institute on interdisciplinary communication.
After all of this, he is thoroughly institutionalized.
In 2008, Lucas was ordained priest in the
Episcopal Church. He tries to maintain
contact with the various academic communities he's passed through and
build bridges between religious and scientific perspectives. In March,
his first book came out -
Life in Space:
Astrobiology for Everyone - dealing with what science tells us about
life in the universe. (He recommends it to everyone.)
In his spare time, Lucas practices Hapkido, a Korean martial
art and the family business. He
sporadically maintains a blog about
being a Christian in the postmodern age.
